Education

Why Education?

Education is no guarantor of success, but lack of knowledge is a sure limiter of it. While many European countries consider education both a right and a social investment so provide free universities, in the US degrees are both an expensive privilege and often a risky gamble resulting in an average student loan debt of almost $40,000 (Student Loan Hero, 2016). High debt restricts the graduate’s choices and if they do not get the anticipated job, repayment is difficult. Discharge through bankruptcy is only sometimes possible, never easy, and always costly with long term consequences. One bright note however: although degrees are expensive, the knowledge gained through traditional education can be free, or close to it. The Arizona State Constitution states “The university ... and the instruction furnished shall be as nearly free as possible.” Article 11 Section 6 While this goal has not been realized by government, private organizations have made this a reality for those with an internet connection. This site is a brief listing of popular quality educational programs that are either free or provide their services for a nominal fee. They can be funded by grants, advertisement revenue, or freemium memberships.

Freemium: Basic or Introductory services are free of charge, while advanced functionality or additional resources incur a cost which supports the overall platform.

The end goal is up to the reader: Many people want a new job, or to improve their skills to support their current job. Others may want to learn a new skill for a hobby, or for the simple joy of learning. Whatever the goal, learning what resources exist improves the efficiency of effort, reducing wasted time, money, and emotional resources spent in attaining that goal.
