College Open Textbooks This is an open source alternative to expensive textbooks and can be used for college instructors for their courses or self learners. For example: this book on CSS would be useful for styling websites.

Coursera is a compendium of college courses garnered from a partnership with various universities including John Hopkins, Stanford, and Duke University. Some of these have their own free offerings as well. Coursera’s partnerships are not limited to the US, but include organizations from 28 countries making this a valued international resource for students anywhere with access to the internet.

Desmos is a free online alternative to expensive graphing calculators. 

Toastmasters is an inexpensive way to improve communication and leadership skills, which are important in advancing in a career. Find a club near you with this search tool. 

Courses direct from colleges:

edX is an aggregator: search by subject matter and it will point you to the college or other organization with a free course in it.

FutureLearn has connections with universities from many countries offering courses from diverse categories. Registration required but no fees for the classes. Certificates and degrees offered from partner universities have various costs.

MIT Open Courseware offers notes, exams, and videos from MIT - no registration required. College credit is not given, but the knowledge is free for all.

Stanford Online is another program direct from a college that provides vast resources to any inquiring mind.

IT and Technical Specific:

CodeAcademy is a free site to learn programming. Members earn badges upon completion of lessons. Over a dozen program languages are offered.

Cyber Skills Training List has an extensive list of cyber-security training resources. 

Cybrary is a freemium IT Security instruction site. The freemium plan allows all members to earn Cybytes by logging in, posting to forums, etc. These Cybytes are spent on badges or skills verifications. Extra Cybytes can be purchased for a modest fee.

Lynda is essentially a video learning service, with some interaction to help hone skills. Members can search and review a particular item and spend perhaps 15 minutes, or complete a course over several hours or days. Certificates of Completion are awarded after finishing courses and these can be posted on LinkedIn, which bought the company in April 2015. Membership is free for paid LinkedIn members, or $20 - $33 per month depending on the plan

Udacity  has both free and paid courses for a large variety of technologies which range from a few weeks of work to several months-long nano-degrees.

Microsoft Virtual Academy  is free Microsoft training delivered by experts.

Communities can also be a great way to learn, such as Spiceworks for IT Professionals.
