Natural Economy
Carolus Linnaeus, is best known for laying the foundation of modern biological nomenclature and systematics. He is much less well-known for his work on “Oeconomia naturae,” The economy of nature was a major early development in what became the modern field of ecology. His ideas came from his study of rural peoples and livelihood systems in Sweden, especially swidden (or slash-and-burn) agriculture. As 'natural economy' it includes the workings of a non-monetary barter system, nutrient cycling to serve human ends, and the folk understanding of the ecological principles underlying the sustainability of food production.
