The EDUCAST Fishing Tournament is an annual high school event held at Pleasant Valley Trout Farm, just south of Aylmer, Ontario. Founded in 2002 by Steve Voros and Darren Jacko, the tournament began as a small competition for students from East Elgin Secondary School. Over the years, it has grown into a province-wide tradition, now welcoming participants from more than 100 high schools across Ontario.
Hosted on the scenic, stocked ponds of Bob Bishop’s trout farm, the single-day tournament offers students a unique outdoor experience rooted in sport, stewardship, and education. The event’s main goal is to introduce youth to the great outdoors through hands-on learning and the lifelong skill of fishing.
Students without their own gear can borrow a fishing rod at no charge for the day, courtesy of Shimano, helping ensure the tournament is accessible to all. Participants compete for the highest total weight of trout caught, with weigh stations managed by East Elgin’s Environmental Leadership Program. All fish are identified, weighed, and quickly released to promote responsible, sustainable fishing practices. School registration is now coordinated by East Elgin Secondary School staff members Tim Bubb-Clarke and Katherine Russell.
Beyond the competition, EDUCAST has evolved into a full-day celebration with a BBQ lunch, event shirts, and generous giveaways. Thanks to strong support from community sponsors, the event also features booths, contests, and interactive exhibits, offering students an engaging and educational experience.
The top ten anglers—based on total catch weight—receive prize packs donated by sponsors and earn the opportunity to fish in the Turkey Point Pro-Am Tournament, paired with professional anglers on Lake Erie.
Educast Fishing wouldn't be possible without the vision of Steve and Darren, and the ongoing support of our sponsors, volunteers, and hosts. Together, they provide an unforgettable opportunity for students to connect with nature and learn the value of outdoor recreation.
