Realistic Fiction Text “No David”
Description of the book
This book is about a boy named David. During the book it shows him doing things that he should not do. He continues to do things he shouldn't but at the end his mom tells him that she still loves him.
Connection to genre
This connects to realistic fiction because it shows the kiddos what they are not supposed to do. They know they are not to do some things and still do them. At the end of the book his mom tells him that he still loves him even though he does things he is not supposed to. This shows that no matter what family will love you.
Use in the classroom
In the classroom I will use this at the beginning of the year to talk about positive and negative behaviors. During the book David does a lot of things he should not and he gets told “no” by adults the whole time. David needs different reminders, we will talk about ways we could remind friends to follow the rules. Overall, this will be a great book for building a community. I would use this book to teach writing because it uses punctuation alot. Most of the pages have an exclamation point, and commas. This shows the students how to use an exclamation point the correct way. I will have them do a quick write asking them to write an exciting story about school.
Description of the book
This book is about a little girl named Ibb. She walked past a castle everyday but there was no one there. She was very curious as to who lived there. All the townspeople had their own ideas of what was inside the castle. One day Ibb worked up the courage to go and knock on the door. She heard a very loud hiss which scared her away and she ran to school. When she got home she had an invitation to go to the castle. She went inside, there was a guard who was the last one left. She got a tour of the castle and enjoyed her time a lot. The guard even asked her to take over the castle.
Connection to genre
This book is about a castle. Castles are in little girls' fantasies. During the book people talk about how there are monsters and scary creatures inside. She works up the courage to knock and she hears a scary noise and runs away. She gets a note from the castle later asking her to come. She meets a knight and thinks it is so cool. This connects to fantasy because it talks about castles and knights which are not true, they are fairy tales.
Use in the classroom
If we did a fantasy theme week I would read this book. I would ask the children if they have ever met a princess or been to a castle to wake their brains up. We would read the book and talk about courage after. Ibb has the courage to go and knock on the castle door. The courage ends up paying off and she is going to take over the castle. I am going to ask the kids if they have ever been courageous. I am going to use this to teach kids about ideas in writing. They are going to see so many people with different ideas and they are all great ideas about what is inside the castle. I will have the students go to their desk and brainstorm ideas about what they could write about. Although I will give them a certain thing to think of for example a field trip. I would say what “story ideas” can you come up with about a field trip.
Mystery Text “The Detective Dog”
Description of the book
There is a dog named Nell and he works with a Detective(6 year old little boy). Together they solve mysteries with her sense of smell. They even solve what happened to the library. They figure it out and Nell gets a library card himself so he can read.
Connection to genre
Around Halloween I will introduce the genre mystery. Some kids could get scared so I will introduce it with this book. The dog is a detective trying to solve the mystery of the library. During the book the dog uses detective skills to solve the mystery.
Use in the classroom
In the classroom I would use this book in October to introduce mystery books. This is a great book because it is not too scary but gets the point across about what a mystery is. I will ask the students if they have ever done a scavenger hunt. I will tell them how you have to follow clues during a scavenger hunt and you do with mysteries too. After I read the book I will ask them follow up questions and then have them do a mystery in the classroom. I would use this book to talk about voice. The dog talks a lot and I think it is interesting for children to see how dogs can talk in books. I feel as though he is very funny and vocal so it will be great for students to learn how to use voice in writing.
Folktale Text “The Princess and The Pea”
Description of Book
This book is about a prince who is looking for his princess. He searches everywhere but still can’t find his princess. One stormy night someone comes to the castle claiming to be a princess. They try to have her pass the pea test. She passes the test and they realize she is the princess he has been waiting for.
Connection to genre
There is an old folktale about if you can feel one pea then you are a princess no matter how many mattresses you have. In this story the prince is looking for a princess and he can not find her no matter how far he looks. He finally finds a girl who passes his mothers test of not being able to sleep with a pea under her bed.
Use in the classroom
In the classroom I would introduce this book with a fairy tale/folktale theme. I would talk about how there are many old tales of princesses and more. I will ask if they have ever heard a folktale or if they have any idea what that is. I will then proceed to read the book and ask them if they think they would have felt the pea or not. I will use this book to teach organization. This book is very organized in how it shows what the prince goes through to find his princess. After I read this book I will have the students go write a story about getting ready for school in the morning. They should go through from when they wake up until they get here. This will show if they know how to put events in the correct order and not go off on any tangents. I will use this to show organization because it shows how to put texts in order.
Science Fiction Text “The Three Little Aliens and The Big Bad Robot”
Description of Book
This book is very similar to the Three Little Pigs. Three aliens decide to leave home and go explore the universe. They each chose a different place to live. The first one gets ruined and broken and he tries to escape to his brother. He hides with his brother and the big bad Alien gets him too. They were running from the Alien and ended up in the third brother's house. The big bad Alien tried to get into the last house but when he went in through the telescope he got caught in the light.
Connection to genre
This connects to science fiction because it talks about space and aliens. The book shows space and the solar system. I think it is important to connect science in literacy because it is not always taught as much as it should be. Overall, this connects to science fiction because it talks about the solar system.
Use in the classroom
I would use this in class if I was doing a solar system unit. I would introduce it by asking the students what they know about the Solar System. After that I would read the book and ask them to describe some of the planets and stars they saw in the solar system. We would discuss it and then color the solar system. I would use this to teach the students word choice. They use great words in the book and show how word choice matters. I would ask students to really think about their word choice and write about what they would want to do in space.
Description of the book
This book is about a boy named Micheal. He starts his life in Italy and then moves to New York with his family. When he became older he met a girl and married her. They started a family in Little Italy. His grandson opened a restaurant and he began to have family dinners there.
Connection to genre
This book connects to the genre because it talks about having to immigrate to America. In history there were a lot of people who immigrated to America. This story gives a great example of immigration and what life someone can have when they immigrate. I think that it is easy to follow and students will enjoy it.
Use in the classroom
During reading I will read this book aloud. Before I read it I will ask them if they know anything about history. I will give them a brief background and then read the book. After I read it I will ask them questions about the book. After that I want them to do a quick write about what you would do if you immigrated to somewhere new. This story shows how to order a story consecutively. For a quick write as I said above I will have them write about what they would do if they immigrated. I would have them go through their whole life and make sure it is in the correct order.
