EDPT204 Winter '20

EDPT 204 is the introductory course for educational media and technology at McGill University (Faculty of Education).

The course reviews :

1. audio-visual education (text, visuals, audio, video, augmented and virtual reality).

2. media and information literacy from kindergarten through university levels.

3. the rationale and underlying principles for the design, production and effective use of media are emphasized using SAM (Successive Approximation Model.

The course takes a studio teaching and project-based learning method. This semester I am using a 'spiral' approach to teaching the course. We come back to the same topic with a different lens several times throughout the course

Students are introduced to the topic (i.e. books, movies, etc.) through an online (LaunchPad) module.
We then come back to the topic (several weeks later) through student created media projects & mini presentations.
Finally, while students present & share their media creations, during the second half of the course we conduct a critical media analysis (Bruzzese & Ott)

Required Text (selected readings)

The 3rd edition was just published and the McGill Library has kindly purchased unlimited downloads of the ebook for students. Here is the link to the ebook version. You will need to log in to the McGill Library to view/ download the book. You have access to the whole book but please download & bring to class in PDF format the following chapters --> 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11. The in class media labs will be much easier for you to work on; if you the have the PDF copy readily available with your group.
I am uploading several articles and the chapter on Perusall account. Please create an account if you don't have one. Use the following course code BRUZZESE-??????? to access the materials.
I've included a screenshot below of the text in the McGill Library. Make sure you get the 3rd edition (i.w. 2019 version).

The Media Essentials text by Campbell is also required (online version only).

This semester I want everyone to experience an online learning class. I thought would be fun to be a learner while creating materials for both environments (online & regular face-to-face classrooms).

Consequently, you will be required to purchase the LaunchPad Version of the Media Essentials text. The cost will be $60.99 Canadian. Make sure you go the CANADIAN store in order to be charged in Canadian funds. I've attached a screenshot so there is no confusion. Once you have purchases the text you will see the following screen:
