Hellenic Society of International Law & International Relations
At the annual conference of the Society of International Law & International Relations I had the pleasure of moderating the session on the role of international law and diplomacy in addressing climate change. We discussed recent developments in the field of negotiations under the UNFCCC, how climate change affects migration, and the increasing activity of national and international courts.
The main aim of this initiative is to bring together young professionals from the region and beyond to exchange practices and ideas on how to improve the role of youth in climate diplomacy and create a network in a region highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The conference was hosted by EPOKA University, in collaboration with the Magna Charta Observatory, the Center for Southeast European Studies (University of Graz, Austria), and the Faculty of Political Sciences (University of Belgrade, Serbia). The event was part of the Jean Monnet Module “EU Integration of Western Balkans: Patterns and Issues,” coordinated by the Center for European Studies at EPOKA University and co-funded by the European Commission.
I participated as a Keynote Speaker delivering a speech on the topic "the Bumpy Road to Climate Neutrality and Just Transition: Challenges for the Western Balkans”.
It was a pleasure to reconnect with wonderful and creative colleagues and discuss the outcomes of the ARSINOE project aimed at creating climate-resilient regions through systemic solutions and innovations.
Discussion about the climate crisis and potential ways of international cooperation at the Turkey Europe Forum organized by Stiftung Mercator. Emmanuella Doussis & Ioannis Grigoriadis, coordinated by Talya Aydin. Our session began with the movie "Wine dark sea" directed by Nefin Dinç, which captures the main transformations observed in the Eastern Mediterranean because of climate change and their impacts not only on biodiversity and the ecosystems but also on productive sectors of the economy, such as fishing, agriculture, and tourism. Overall, throughout the film, Nefin builds to her most controversial and at the same time exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our troubled relations in the Eastern Mediterranean to something radically better. The climate change example is especially apt to illustrate that we are in the same boat. It is simply impossible to face climate change challenges in the region through isolated actions.
Discussion on climate change management, GR-eco islands and island sustainability Youth Climate Diplomacy Forum Conference at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on 1 and 2 November 2024
The aim of this activity is to develop a thorough understanding of the key legal, political, medical and communication aspects of existing global and regional migration flows and patterns. From the global architecture of contemporary migration to emerging conceptual and policy challenges, legal & policy frameworks and state practice, the role of public health in migration settings, the role of media to the role of NGOs and host community solidarity in driving migration policies. Distinguished academics, researchers and practitioners will shed light on these issues, while the participants will have the opportunity to interact with local organizations and discuss challenges and practices from the field.
We had an interesting discussion with Professor Dimitris Kairidis, former Minister of Migration on migration policies and the challenges ahead.
In the afternoon four NGOs visited the premises of NKUA to present their mission, goals, and challenges to all our participants through a group discussion.

A group of students from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in January 2024, handed over to the Mayor of Athens, Prof. Haris Doukas, the Green Pact for Athens with policy proposals for mitigating climate change, adapting to its effects as well as horizontal issues of information, awareness, and education. The Pact was produced by 60 students who participated in the Climate Change Assembly within the ARSINOE - Climate Resilient Regions framework through the Systemic Solutions and Innovations (Horizon 2020) program. The students worked in groups, recorded the existing actions, and formulated specific proposals for reducing energy consumption, the circular economy, transport, infrastructure, vulnerable groups, etc. Prof. Emmanuela Doussi, Dr Othon Kaminiaris, and PhD candidate Ion Vallianos accompanied the students at the Town Hall.
