THE Dilemma - Microbiology Or Viruses
It has always been a tough decision for Students when it comes to selecting from elective courses. As a student in the University of Ghana, your first encounter to selecting from electives is during UGRC registration. These posses many challenges to Students which make them stranded and later make wrong choices getting bad grades at the end.
In Biochemistry, a stint of this is felt in level 300 first semester where Students are to choose between Industrial Microbiology and Biochemistry of Viruses. The steps usually taken by most people during UGRC registration is as follows;
1. Read through the course description all the UGRCs
2. Consult someone who has already taken the course
3. Check your time table
4 Select course of choice that will fit your time table
Similarly in choosing between Micro B and Viruses steps 1 & 2 are the critical points.
This might be a game of choice but it's really a game of decision of grades.
A L400 Student narrates how he made his decision
" I first consulted both halves that is someone who had already studied Micro B and another Viruses.
Most people who studied Micro B told me that his choice was based on the fact that he wanted to understand the principles in Microbiology and which would help him during second semester's Microbiology Practical. Some told me the challenges ahead such as the course being full of activities and also presentation at the end of the final lecture.
Also those who had done viruses told me the lecturer is cool and that he expects much from you during the exam. There are a lots of discussion in class from which his exam covers. You will once have a taste of pizza from the lecturer.
Upon hearing all these I made my choice and registered for Industrial Microbiology with my reason of wanting to gain knowledge of the industrial application of Microbiology. Impromptu quizzes, interactive sessions and presentation are the Hallmark of industrial Microbiology.
One can however registered for both courses which comes with its own pros and cons.Initially I started attending both classes (Virus and Micro B) to gain knowledge on both courses but my favorite (industrial) was too demanding that I had to stop attending Virus class.
Only one person registered for both courses during my time.
, Both courses are good and it depends on you the individual. People normally complain about certain courses but someone in there also had a grade A. I believe this is about the individual plus acquired knowledge from predecessors."
