The Digital Student - Challenges and Opportunities with the Computer as an Instrument in Music Education
EDI Guidelines is one of the outcomes from the practice-based school research project "The Digital Student - Challenges and Opportunities with the Computer as an Instrument in Music Education" (2021-2024). Here, we have compiled material and resources from the project for you to explore. Use the material, information, and instructions as a starting point - we hope that you will deconstruct and reassemble them to fit whatever challenge or situation you are working with. Feel free to reach out and tell us how the guidelines are working for you! Alongside the material in the guidelines, you can also read our field notes with lessons and experiences from the project's and the background, implementation, and results.
The guidelines are intended to support in connection with teaching that involves the use of the EDI instrument (Electronic Digital Instrument). They aim to create an understanding of the instrument in relation to individual instrumental teaching as well as ensemble teaching but also support other teaching environments and subjects involving EDI. The guidelines are designed with headings and pages so that you can absorb the information and material both linearly and irregularly. Each page has an overview followed by videos, tips, method exercises, and observations. We recommend that you study and absorb the entire material and then have the guidelines available as support during your teaching.
To increase understanding of the material in the guidelines, you can complement and deepen your knowledge through self-study in areas such as sound engineering, music production, and the programs and control surfaces that we describe. The manufacturers of the programs and control surfaces have several instructional and informational videos available on the internet that can be helpful.
The EDI Guidelines do not claim to be complete and comprehensive, especially since this is an area that is constantly evolving and changing. We know that we are operating within a creative domain. If you have any questions, we are here to help you answer them! If you have tried something and want to share, we are here to listen, be inspired, and share!
