Organizational theory, and the thinking that has shaped it, has had a significant but often-overlooked influence on our schools and educational administration.
The power of organizational structure, discourse, and culture to shape our professional lives has important implications on our practice; as does our agency in reshaping organizational structures and practices.
The purpose of this course is to review the role of organizations and organizational theory in education from a critical perspective.
We will look at the roots of organizational theory, critiques of dominant models, and the opportunities presented by new visions of formal and informal organizations, and organizational change.
Upon completion, students will:
Critically analyze major organizational theories in educational contexts
Develop a sophisticated understanding of organizational behavior in schools
Apply theoretical frameworks to real-world educational leadership challenges
Evaluate organizational effectiveness and improvement strategies
Synthesize theoretical knowledge with practical educational leadership experiences
