Our main source of assessment is done through formative assessment. Through the different units in this course, teachers will be checking for understanding in different ways. The most commonly used assessment will be verbal and visual assessment. An example of what this many look like is having the class give a thumbs up or thumbs down if they do or do not understand the lesson. One form of assessment that will be used is a game of agree or disagree. One side of the classroom will have picture of a thumbs up and the word agree, while the opposite side of the classroom will have a thumbs down and the word disagree. The teacher will read a sentence which will state a fact about the topic, and the students will decide if they agree or disagree on the topic. An example of this would be "An unacceptable way to communicate that you are upset is pushing one of your peers" and the students would choose if they agree or disagree. The students can then have the choice to explain why they agreed or disagreed. Another example of what this could look like would be in our Healthy Eating unit. The students would receive a worksheet with a plate on it and the students will then make a meal that they think is healthy.
Our summative assessments will be done at the end of each unit to check for students understanding on the topic. This assessment will be done in similar ways to our formative assessment plan. Our summative assessment will be mostly done as complete or incomplete as our audience is intended to be primary students. We will use similar activities for our summative assessment as we do with our formative assessment, however it will be done at the end of the unit to check for the students complete understanding.
We chose to construct our assessment plan in the way we did, mainly because of the age group of our audience. It can be incredibly difficult to quiz or test younger students as it is not always an effective form of assessment for them. Young children can often explain their rationale or explain what they understand through verbal or visual communication more effectively then through writing. We want to give every student the best chance possible to showcase their learning and understanding of a topic by providing multiple forms of assessment.
