Description
The Collection Mapping and Analysis assignment was completed in ISCI 720 as a group assignment. The purpose of this project was to obtain an overview of the entire collection by utilizing available tools and reports. The emphasis was on evaluating the collection’s impact on supporting the curriculum and meeting the learners' needs. The assignment consisted of two components: a memo and a presentation. The memo was written to the school's administration, highlighting the key points of the analysis and needs for the emphasis collection. The presentation included a collection analysis report that included information on currency, circulation, curriculum, condition of items, cost, and diversity. This collaborative group assignment involved a total of four members, and we examined the collection at the Center for Knowledge in the Richland Two School District, one of our group member’s home school.
Analysis
This group assignment provided meaningful dialogue within our group. It was nice to see different viewpoints and help each other. As newcomers to this process, we were all able to discuss different practices for effectively conducting this analysis. It was challenging when not all of us could access the same information from the chosen school, but we all worked together to share the necessary items to ensure this assignment was a success. We found that the school's collection was relatively up-to-date, but required additional resources to better align with the curriculum and future collaborations. We selected World War II due to an upcoming collaboration unit with 5th grade teachers. Despite having a large collection of World War II books, it lacked titles focusing on specific needs of the South Carolina State Social Studies Standards. I felt like we did a good job of adding specific topics and diversity to the collection to ensure success within these standards.
Reflection
This assignment significantly contributed to my understanding of collection development. Regularly evaluating your collection is crucial to assess its alignment with current needs and the development of the library collection. Utilizing different resources such as Titlewave Analysis is helpful in making important and informed collection decisions. Nonfiction is an area that is vital to collection analysis and mapping because of the age-sensitive items. It is also important to concentrate on the sections of the library that will be most beneficial to your teachers and students.Recently, I came across a teacher working on a project within her class that I couldn’t fully support with available resources in the library. I immediately turned to Titlewave to evaluate this section and find books that better align with the standards for the future.
