In an ecosystem, living things interact with each other and with the nonliving parts of their environment.

What makes up an ecosystem? In an ocean ecosystem, you can find crabs, sand, fish, salt water, seaweed, rocks, sea stars, and sunlight. All of these things need each other to survive in their ecosystem.

In ecosystems, a school of fish that all live together would be called a population. In a forest ecosystem, all of the wolves that live in that forest make up the wolf population. But other living things are found in forests too! Animal and plant populations in an area may be part of the same community. A community is all of the populations that live and interact in an area.
