ISSUES IN ECONOMIC THEORY AND POLICY

Every second year, the Economics Department organizes an International Conference on Issues in Economic Theory and Policy. The objective is to encourage young faculty and researchers, who have completed or are undertaking M. Phil. / Doctoral research, to present their output before a broader audience and receive a critical feedback on their work by renowned economists.

The conference is funded by a generous endowment given by Prof. Mukul Majumdar, HT Warshow and Robert Irving Warshow Professor in the Economics Department at Cornell University, in the memory of his late father, Prof. Nirmal Kanti Majumdar, an ex-faculty in the Political Science Department, Presidency College. 

The Conference has been held in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Scholars from various parts of India (Jawaharlal Nehru University, Center for Development Studies, Delhi School of Economics, Indian Statistical Institute, Indian Institute of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, Shiv Nadar University, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Viswa Bharati University, etc.) and from abroad (Massachusets Institute of Technology, University of Wyoming, Queensland University of Technology Business School, Brisbane) had responded to the call for papers, or given keynote / invited lectures.

THIRD CONFERENCE

As the registration portal has closed, and we do not have any provision for spot registration we are not in a position to accommodate any more guests - even for specific sessions.

Due to the large number of submissions, most of which were of a high quality, it has been decided to extend the submission by half a day. The conference will, therefore, be on 26 (Registration from 12.00 noon) and 27 (from 10.00 AM) December 2019 (Thursday & Friday).

PLENARY LECTURES

Past plenary lectures have been given by Prof Abhijit Banerjee (MIT), Prof. Pulak Ghosh (IIMB), Prof. Damodaran (IIMB) and the late Dr. Shamnad Basheer.

This year we will have three plenary lectures.

1.       Venue of Conference: The Conference will be held at the Economics Department, Presidency University, College Street Campus. It is adjacent to Calcutta University and close to Medical College – both prominent landmarks of Kolkata. Please inform the security that you are going to the Conference of the Economics Department, and they will be glad to provide directions.

2.       Registration: The Registration counter will be open from 12.00 Noon to 1.10 PM in Room No. 30A on 26 December 2019. This is in the first floor landing, besides the Political Science department. Please collect your conference kit from the faculty and research scholars over there. On 27 December 2019, the counter will be open from 9.30 to 10.00 AM, again in Room No. 30A. There is no need to bring your Registration Voucher. However, please identify whether you are presenting a paper, or participating – we have prepared separate lists for each category.

3.       Presentations: The presentation time is about 25 minutes, including interaction. KIndly keep to this limit as the conference program is extremely tight.

Please identify your session. We request you to send the powerpoint or pdf presentations to us by email by the evening of 22.12.2019. They may be emailed to supravat.econ@presiuniv.ac.in with copy marked to Faculty in charge of your session. It would help us if you mark the session number (eg 3A, 2A, etc.) in your email. Otherwise, you may upload the file at the session by requesting Faculty / Research Scholar in charge of your room.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of West Bengal and one of the largest metropolitan cities in India. Kolkata is the sub-contintent's London. Situated by the river Hoogly, it is a city that shocks and charms the unsuspecting visitor. Abject poverty mixes inexplicably with crumbling British Raj-era gems, sprawling gardens and historical colleges. Long known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata continues to spawn generations of poets, writers, film producers and Nobel Prize winners. 

Kolkata is well connected by rail (Howrah, Sealdah, Shalimar and Kolkata) and air (Netaji Subhas International Airport.

Tourist spots include Victoria Memorial Hall, Indian Museum, Dakshinewswar Kali Temple, Pareshnath Jain temple, Belur Ramkrishna Math, Jorasanko Thakur Bari (ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore), Marble Palace, Howrah Bridge, to name a few.

Marketing at New Market and Gariahat markets is another enjoyable experience.

Eateries abound from the Chinese restaurants in China Town, heritage road side shops like Paramount (sherbet shop in College Street), Putiram (also in College Street), the 200-year old sweet shop of Nukur Nandi (in Hedua), European tea shop Flurys, confectionary at Nahouns, local food in Kasturi and Aheli, Mudhlai restaurants of Arsalan, Indian Restauarant and Royal, to top grade restaurants at Mainland China, Peter Cat, Mocambo, Marco Polo, and others.

Kolkata has a tropical wet-and-dry climate that is designated Aw under the Köppen climate classification. December is relatively pleasant—with an average high of 270C and average low of 190C.

Presidency University

The 200 year old Presidency University is situated in College Street – known for its road side book stalls and the iconic Coffee House, where intellectuals debate on socio-political and cultural issues. It is adjacent to Calcutta University Presidency University (erstwhile Hindoo College, later renamed Presidency College) is the most famous educational institute in India. Legends like C.V. Raman (Nobel Laureate in Physics), Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose, Meghnad Bose, Tarak Nath Sen, and others used to teach here; students included Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate in Economics), Satyajit Ray (film director), Subash Chandra Bose, and other well known personalities.
