Vision:

·    To provide a general understanding of the functioning of the economic system and the role of institutions, groups and region within the system.

·    To analyse the performance and functioning of government markets and institutions in the context of social and economic problems.

·    To equip students with knowledge and skills to deal with day to day economic, social and business realities.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:

                        Bharathi Women’s College (Autonomous) is the premier institution of the higher education in North-Chennai. It was established in the year 1964 and has completed five decades of dedicated services to cater the needs of the students. B.A Economics Tamil Medium was introduced in the academic year 1967 and the English Medium in 1971. A sound business model has its foundation in a stable economic structure. This is the basis on which a new paradigm of study- post graduation business economics was introduced in the year 2001.

The growth of the department from 40 students during its  commencement to 562 students at present (U.G and P.G)  has made possible by the relentless efforts and benevolent guidance of the heads of the department and the dedicated band of staffs who nurtured it. The faculty keeps abreast with the latest   trends in the subjects and is  committed to quality teaching. Ensuring quality in the academic  programmes is an on going exercise which is constantly redefined through expert opinion of board of studies and faculty members of the department. The department of economics have a long distinguish history of widening the horizons of its students and helping them to gain holistic knowledge  required for over all development.

During the academic year 2016-2017, curriculum was revised; henceforth M.A Business Economics is converted into M.A Economics.

Our Department promotes students to indulge in extension activities as a part of Curriculum. To encourage entrepreneurship skills, students  Participated in various exhibitions by selling hand made products.

During the academic year 2019-2020, curriculum was revised and incorporated Rural Economy, Modern Banking and Insurance & Entrepreneurial Development at UG Level and Health Economics & Labour Economics at PG Level.

         Strategically well planned, executed curriculum and co-curriculum helps in enriching the knowledge and experience of the students and faculties in the Department of Economics. 

Highlights of the Department

·    Students are motivated for Self Employment through Women Entrepreneurship Development Programmes.

·    Students are encouraged to take up various competitive Government examinations like TNPSC, SLET, NET etc.

·    Students are motivated to participate in various inter-collegiate Competition .
