Dear Campus Partners,
I am writing to you to share some important updates and reminders for the Kellogg Certificate Program for Undergraduates. Most importantly, I want to let you know that we have made some changes to the corequisites for the Financial Economics program which we believe will make the program accessible to more students. No changes have been made to the MA pre/co-requisite requirements.
I also want to make you aware of the Kellogg Certificate information sessions for incoming first year students that we will be hosting on September 2 (3:00-3:30 pm) and September 3 (10:00-10:30 am). If you have first year students who are interested in learning more about the Kellogg Certificate, they can register to attend at https://bit.ly/kelloggcert2020. Sophomores and Juniors should not attend these sessions as they are intended for new students. Additional information sessions will be announced for sophomores and juniors in the coming weeks.
What is changing for Financial Economics certificate students?
Beginning in academic year 2020-21, students applying to the Financial Economics Certificate will complete the same set of prerequisite and corequisite requirements that the Managerial Analytics students complete. This change has been implemented to increase accessibility to the program to students in a variety of different majors.
Which corequisite courses are impacted?
Students who apply to the Financial Economics certificate this year and in the future will not be required to complete both ECON 381-1 and ECON 381-2 (Econometrics 2) or equivalent. Instead, students will be able to choose to take ECON 381-1 (Econometrics 1) or a combination of courses in Statistics or Industrial Engineering. Additionally, Financial Economics students will need to complete an Optimization course. These changes will align the Financial Economics corequisites with the existing Managerial Analytics corequisites.
What if students are already working towards completing the old FE corequisite requirements?
Students who apply to the Financial Economics Certificate during the 2020-21 academic year will have the choice to complete the new set of corequisites or the old, "legacy" version of the Financial Economics corequisites. Only students applying during the 2020-21 school year will have this option and must indicate which corequisite option they are pursuing in their application. Beginning in 2021-2022, all students will complete the same set of requirements.
Can current Kellogg Certificate Students complete the new requirements?
No. Students admitted to the Financial Economics certificate prior to 2020-21 will still be required to complete the corequisite requirements set forth in their offer letters.
Where can I view the new requirements?
Both the “legacy FE requirements” and the updated requirements are attached. The changes can also be viewed on the FE page of the CPU website.
What should I do if I have additional questions?
Please email me with any questions or concerns that you have.
If students have any questions about the changes, they may schedule an advising appointment at https://calendly.com/kelloggundergrad or contact us via email at kelloggundergrad@kellogg.northwestern.edu.
Information sessions for sophomores and juniors will scheduled soon. They can check on the status of upcoming information sessions and application dates on our Find Out More page. Additionally, interested students are encouraged to sign up for our email list to receive program updates, application updates, and invitations to information sessions.
I hope that you are all healthy and that Fall quarter begins as smoothly as possible.
Best,
Amanda Stasinski
