Econ 102

Principles of Economics (Micro)

Palomar College -- Spring 2021

Online asynchronous course with Professor Anastasia Zavodny

Welcome!

Welcome to Microeconomics! This semester we will cover the basics of all things micro and learn the tools of understanding the economics you hear on the news. While we won't be holding live class sessions, I will be available to meet with you digitally throughout the semester.

What is Econ 102 all about?

This course will introduce you to the basics of microeconomics and we will look at how these principles impact our daily lives. Some of the topics we will explore this semester include monopolies, the impact of advertising, game theory (yes, there are games involved!), health care -- plus so much more! If any of this sounds daunting, don't panic! Everything can seem scary until you begin - economics is no different.

Course Basic Info

Check out this short video for how to login to Canvas. Remember, our class will not display until after Jan 23rd!

Where do we find our class?

We will be accessing all our class information on Canvas. You will find the link for Canvas at the top of every Palomar College webpage, or directly by clicking here. If this is your first time using Canvas, don't panic! Everything is fairly straightforward (that being said, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions - no matter how simple they may seem!). Once you log in to Canvas, you will have access to all of your courses for the semester.

NOTE: Your course will not appear until it is live; this will occur by January 23rd (so check back after that date!).

About Your Professor

Hi and welcome to my webpage! We already have so much in common -- just like you, I took classes at a community college. So many classes, in fact, that they awarded me a degree. :)

After completing my studies at Palomar College, I transferred to UC San Diego, where I earned my bachelors degree in Management Science (an Economics discipline) and minored in both International Studies and Mathematics. Finding college to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys, I continued my studies at UC Santa Barbara, earning a masters degree in Economics (with an emphasis in Business Economics) and another masters degree in Statistics.

I've been teaching at area community colleges for many years, in either the Economics department or the Business department (or sometimes both, just to keep things interesting).

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy the cliché spending time with my family, friends, and dog. Life is uncertain and unpredictable, now more than ever. I'm so grateful I was able to complete my first marathon during quarantine (yes, it's possible to run in a mask!), and I look forward to the day we are all able to gather together again safely. Until then, keep wearing your mask and staying home!

Office Hours: My scheduled hours for this semester, along with the Zoom room link, will be located in your Canvas page. Office Hours are setup on a drop-in basis (meaning you can just click on the link to join anytime during the listed hours and I will be there). Of course, I am happy to arrange additional times or meet one-on-one with you too -- feel free to message me anytime!

Response Policy: If you message me Monday through Friday you can expect a response within 48 hours (honestly, it's likely going to be way faster). If you message me over the weekend, it's also possible (though not guaranteed) you will get a prompt response; however I am attempting some much needed self-care this semester and therefore will no longer be living on my computer 24/7. Be sure to plan offline time for yourself too!
