ECOLE-RESUST is a research laboratory lead by Ion Juvina, PhD.
ECOLE-RESUST aims to contribute to humanity’s efforts to deal with eco-system crises such as climate change and loss of biodiversity. These crises are increasingly seen as "wicked problems" due to their complex, interconnected, uncertain, and evolving nature. Characteristic of wicked problems are high levels of ambiguity, incomplete or contradictory information, and deeply interconnected social, political, and economic factors. Unlike "tame" problems, wicked problems have no clear solutions and are resistant to traditional approaches to problem solving; efforts to solve one problem may reveal or create other problems. This kind of problems require a systems approach to map the web of interacting factors, understand non-linear relationships and interdependencies, and identify turning, tipping, and leverage points. The systems approach requires many scientific disciplines to join their efforts. Our lab contributes to this joint effort by studying the construct of systems thinking. We define systems thinking as our mind’s ability to deal with complexity, requiring pattern recognition, mental simulation, anticipation, sense-making, perspective taking, and cognitive flexibility.
