Pre - Lake Conference  Orientation Programme

The *Pre-Lake Conference Orientation Programme, jointly organised by **IISc, FERNSS and BGS National Public School, Hulimavu, was conducted on **28 August 2026* at the *BGSNPS Auditorium* from 9:15 a.m. to 2:30p.m.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 84 students,  including  74 students from BGSNPS and 10 students from AECS. The programme aimed to sensitise and equip students with knowledge and skills to undertake meaningful projects related to lake conservation, biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

The key resource person, Dr. T. V. Ramachandra, Coordinator, Energy & Wetlands Research Group (EWRG), Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, spoke extensively on ecosystem services, biodiversity and carbon sequestration.  He also guided students on how to develop and take forward projects for participation in the Lake Symposium.

Mr. Vrijulal-  Chairman, FERNSS, delivered an engaging session on Birds from bird identification to how they are adapted to new environment. He highlighted how nature inspires technological innovations, giving the example of the Kingfisher, whose streamlined shape inspired the design of the bullet train to reduce noise and improve efficiency.

Mr. Paras introduced students to soil quality analysis and explained the importance and applications of understanding soil characteristics. Ms. Tulika Mondal conducted an interesting and hands-on session on Geospatial mapping, helping students understand how spatial tools can be used for environmental studies and lake-related projects. Mr. Chathurved,Mr. Chathurved, Consultant at FERNSS, conducted an insightful session on butterfly identification and their importance in the ecosystem. He introduced the students to various butterfly species and explained the key features used for identification, such as wing patterns, colours, size, and behaviour.

He highlighted the significant role of butterflies as pollinators and indicators of environmental health. The session helped students understand the importance of conserving butterfly habitats and protecting biodiversity. The interactive discussion encouraged students to observe and appreciate butterflies as an essential part of our ecosystem.

The sessions were interactive, informative and engaging,  providing students with valuable exposure to scientific approaches for studying and conserving natural ecosystems. The programme successfully inspired students to observe, investigate and work towards the protection of lakes and biodiversity, encouraging them to become responsible environmental stewards.
