East Cobb Middle School Orchestra: Grades 6 - 8
About the Director
Grace Lege is new to East Cobb Middle School as of January 2024. Ms. Lege graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's in instrumental music education. Her specialty is orchestral strings and her primary instrument is the cello. She has hosted 2025 District XII Honor Orchestra Auditions at East Cobb Middle school, and plans to continue doing so. Fun fact: she started cello in 6th grade right here in Cobb County! She spends her summers as faculty for the Upbeat! music camp of East Cobb.
Previously, she received honors for her degree due to her research, performance and thesis titled "Dangerous Music: Censorship in Wartime and Protest Music". She has worked with schools such as Williams IB Middle Magnet School in Tampa, FL and Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, FL. Ms. Lege served as President of FSU's American String Teacher Association (ASTA) chapter. Under her residency, they won 2022's Most Improved Collegiate Chapter. Additionally, she has been Principal Cellist and String Coordinator of Florida State University's Studio Orchestra, where they create live soundtracks of films and video games with a giant screen for audiences. She also went performed on The University Symphony Orchestra's international tour at places such as Steinmetz Hall in Orlando and the Gran Teatro del Cibao in the Dominican Republic.
When she is not teaching, Ms. Lege loves learning overly complicated board games with friends, taking care of her house plants, playing video games, and looking after her rescue cats named Toothless and Gizmo.
The ECMS Wildcat Orchestra program teaches grades 6-8, and is a year-long course. There is no prior music knowledge or experience necessary to 6th grade to join, but you cannot join any music program at ECMS after 6th grade. The goal of this program is that students will take the concepts taught in class and practice them independently and in other subjects- that is why it is called connections! This enhances students' ability to rehearse in classrooms, focusing on ensemble sound. Orchestras are collaborative. They are built on the idea of working together and setting each musician onstage up for success by projecting sound that is clear, consistent, and confident.
