Another wicked cool short film discovery - another one you must watch. Echo Torch is a sci-fi short about an inventor who builds an "electrical torch that reveals a hidden world layered upon our own." The concept itself is quite unique, and I love the visuals - you can see the cool blue torch on the poster, but to actually see it work so flawlessly in this short is wonderful. Echo Torch is directed by Chris Preksta, starring James Fitzgerald as the torchbearer. This has an awesome old school vibe to it, almost like Ghostbusters, and the VFX work is magnificent - making it that much more believable. I also appreciate how the film doesn't rely on dialogue, only just silence and great sound design. There's also a beautiful story bringing it all together.

Description from Vimeo: "An inventor creates an electrical torch that reveals a hidden world layered upon our own - filled with beautiful spirits, strange creatures, and dangerous phantoms." Echo Torch is written and directed by American filmmaker Chris Preksta (find him on Twitter @cpreksta), creator of a few other web series previously. His favorite movies are It's a Wonderful Life and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Features an original score by Ryan Will Stewart, cinematography by John Pope. Echo Torch stars James Fitzgerald, Amy Staggs, Tony Bingham and Jonathan Visser. For more info and a behind-the-scenes look at the film, visit his official website here. Hopefully Chris gets more work soon. For more shorts, click here. Thoughts?

An Interesting spin on the traditional torch stake, this all metal stake is designed specifically for use with our EchoFlame Gel-Fuel. Simply assemble and screw the stake securely in the ground, then place an EchoFlame Gel-Fuel can in the top and light. No hassle or mess, just replace with a new can when needed. The Hammered Garden Torch Stake is simple yet beautiful and is more safe than your traditional tiki torch. Perfect for any outdoor living space.

While not a Mercury Men story this new effort appears to live in a very similar universe, one that appears to be technically now but a now as imagined by the science fiction films of the 50s. The story revolves around a man who has invented a sort of electrical torch with the ability to reveal a hidden dimension surrounding our own.

As you can see, specs.AppDef is a pure python dataclass thatsimply encodes the name of the main binary (entrypoint), arguments topass to it, and a few other runtime parameters such as num_replicas andinformation about the container in which to run (entrypoint=/bin/echo).

The granularity at which the app spec is templetized varies. Some componentssuch as the echo example above are ready-to-run, meaning that theyhave hardcoded application binaries. Others such as ddp (distributed data parallel)specs only specify the topology of the application. Below is one possible templetizationof a ddp style trainer app spec that specifies a homogeneous node topology:

Your application (not the app spec, but the actual app binary) has ZERO dependenciesto TorchX (e.g. /bin/echo does not use TorchX, but a echo_torchx.py componentcan be created for it).

Stallard Playing the use of light against the darkness was a key stylistic decision. When seeing the ghosts, the dark adds to the look and feel and the mood of the scenes. And the torch needs the right amount of light to illuminate certain scenes.

I relied heavily on the layering and masking in SCRATCH (Scaffolds) in several areas, for example, the hallway to ballroom scene. When the lead actor moved from the hallway to the ballroom, the production light was still on the hallway and the practical torch was just not recreating the transition from one room into the other enough. With a few scaffolds and some roto and masking I was able to recreate the effect of the torch, transitioning from one room to another through a doorway.

At times, I would focus heavily on the torch itself, adding layers and using some old tricks like additive or screen on a luma key and playing with blur and opacity to create a glow. A few times the practical torch had to have its blue sheath removed to get an extra F stop in the scene. The scene at this point was completely missing any blue glow from the torch. Luma keys, hue shifts and forcing in blue was the only way to match those shots in. When the lead actor walks down the spiral staircase is a good example of a shot that had no blue at all in it from the camera. This was my most heavy-handed grade because Chris and John could only do so much within the given budget. This was definitely a three-way collaboration of talents.

This 70-minute production will appeal to Pinter specialists, who will be best equipped to appreciate the echoes and variations between the three dystopias. (Nicolas proclaims that his business is to "keep the world clean for God"; the thugs in "The New World Order" think they're "keeping the world clean for democracy.")

I do not have the answers about how best to catalyze a shift within Canada such that broad support for a strategic and constructive approach to development could emerge from a conversation of the sort McArthur is advocating. I do not know how best to bring the right people into the conversation. But, without broadening the scope of those involved and ensuring that all the key players are genuinely willing to work towards a common aim, I fear that such a conversation will fall on deaf ears if it fails to move beyond the echo chamber. 2351a5e196
