"Colors" is a song by American psychedelic soul band Black Pumas. It was released on April 16, 2019, as the third single from the band's debut studio album Black Pumas. The song was written by singer-songwriter Eric Burton, and produced by guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada. It was nominated for Record of the Year and Best American Roots Performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards.[3]

The inspiration of the song was the "multicolored tones of the sky", with the song portraying "themes of mortality and togetherness".[4] In an interview, Burton stated: "This was something that I had written just learning how to play guitar. I had woke up from a nap on my uncle's rooftop in Alamagordo, New Mexico, I was just playing note after note, whatever sounded good. [...] When I was writing this song, I was actually leading worship at a church, and I was trying to figure out, 'How do I write a song that explains the plight of someone who is spiritual trying to find their truth?' That's also the reason for the backup gospel singers you might hear in the chorus, who help round out that uplifting, church-like sound."[5]

An accompanying music video was released on November 22, 2019, and directed by Kristian Mercado. In an interview, he stated: "I really wanted to capture how powerful the sounds and vocals of Black Pumas are, I'm driven by emotion and felt a strong connection to the music. [...] It was such a powerful song and experience that I sought out to do the music video for the song. We shot the whole film in the Bronx, wanted to show the Bronx as a place that was alive and vibrant. We wanted to celebrate family, connections, movement, and life."[6]

The song "The Color Black" by Dayseeker is about how a person's life and soul are poisoned by negative thoughts and destructive behaviors. The protagonist is trapped in a cycle of violence and self-destructive behavior and the color black is used to symbolize this darkness. The chorus reflects the damage done by the protagonist's actions and the embers of a burning fire that remains after their behavior has been unleashed upon someone else. The verses explore the idea of self-reflection and the consequences of their actions, with the protagonist realizing that they will never be able to outrun the darkness and misery that engulfs their life. The outro reflects on how the protagonist's actions have driven away the person they care about, leaving them alone with only a burning reminder of the consequences of their behavior. Ultimately, the song suggests that one must face the consequences of their actions before they can move forward and start to heal.

Hearing "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" again reminds me of its colorful history. Most of us are familiar with fellow North Carolinian Nina Simone's soulful 1964 rendition. As one of her most popular standards, the song has been associated with Nina ever since. However, this timeless classic has an intriguing history that can actually be traced much further back.

Famed folklorist and musicologist, the late Alan Lomax, attributes "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" to Scottish origin, sometime during the 19th century. There's a line in the original version of the song: "I go to the Clyde to mourn and weep / But satisfied I could never sleep," referring to the River Clyde in Scotland. The folk tune made its way across the Atlantic, probably in the company of Scottish immigrants, many of whom settled in North Carolina and Appalachian America. The song was first collected by English folk music archivist, Cecil Sharp, who notated and recorded it during a 1916 trip to North Carolina, which he then published in his English Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians (1917).

Still, the most famous version of them all, is Nina Simone's 1964 classic recording for the Philips label. In covering this timeless standard, successive artists have shifted the song's point of view back-and-forth to tell their own personal story, and, therein lies the beauty of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair": female vocalists sing this ballad to their men; the men dedicate it to their enamoradas.

The woman visits Solomon in his palace, in a room which is made from glass tiles that she mistakes for water. When she lifts her clothes to keep them dry, he tells her she's mistaken. She then says she's been a fool to worship the wrong god and instead chooses to worship Solomon's god.

The most common form of synesthesia is letter-to-color synesthesia, in which the synesthete experiences color when viewing black letters and digits. There are many other forms of synesthesia, including chromesthesia, that affect a surprising number of different sensory domains.

References to colors are commonplace among artistic texts, oftentimes employed by writers and artists both figuratively and literally. Description of colour can add layers of visual imagery to the story that is being told, and can better represent the author's vision in the minds of the audience. Loud and boisterous, they are most common in coniferous forests, but as with all jays, these birds are bold and have grown accustomed to humans, making them common visitors to campsites, parks, and backyards. A solitary nester, Steller's Jays live in flocks for the rest of the year. 


Good bird fact: Steller's Jays can vary widely in both body and head color, ranging from extremely dark populations to paler birds with white marks on their heads. In total, 16 subspecies have been described across North America.

The most widespread dove in North America, the Mourning Dove is an easily startled ground feeder that can be found pretty much anywhere with open habitat, from woodlands to cities. Note the uniform brown-gray coloring, dark spots on the wings, light-blue eye ring, and sharp, pointed tail. These doves can also easily be identified by their woeful cooing, which is often mistaken for the hoots of an owl.

A staple of the American West, this large bird is hard to miss with its black head and back, white breast, long tail, and iridescent feathers.
