Ẹ̀bùn-Èdè Institute is a warm, welcoming space where children and families learn Yorùbá through connection, culture, and joyful interaction. Please note that You do not have to be perfect to begin. You just have to start.
Below are some FAQ with corresponding answers:
A: Ẹ̀bùn-Èdè Institute is a learning space where Yorùbá is shared as a gift and not just taught as a subject. We center language as a connection to family and community; a way of being and belonging; a living, everyday practice, and our goal is for learners to not only understand Yorùbá, but feel at home in it.
A: Our programs are designed for:
Children (ages 5–12)
Families raising multilingual children
Diasporic learners reconnecting with Yorùbá
Beginners with little or no prior experience
No prior knowledge is required, just openness and curiosity.
A: We do not treat language as something to memorize. Instead, we prioritize speaking and interaction from day one; use stories, songs, and everyday conversations; encourage learners to bring their full linguistic identities; involve families in the learning process and language here is shared, lived, and experienced.
A: Not at all. Parents do (not) need to speak Yorùbá fluently to support their children. We provide simple phrases to practice at home; family-friendly activities; opportunities to learn alongside your child in such a way that learning becomes something you do together.
A: Over time, learners begin to:
Introduce themselves in Yorùbá
Engage in simple conversations
Understand common words and expressions
Connect language to culture and everyday life
We focus on confidence, communication, and meaning, not perfection.
A: Classes are interactive and engaging; developmentally appropriate; rooted in real-life communication. A typical session includes:
Speaking and listening activities
Stories and cultural moments
Games and collaborative tasks
Opportunities for reflection and sharing
A: No. We teach Yorùbá as language + culture + identity. This includes:
Songs, greetings, and storytelling
Cultural practices and everyday expressions
Building pride and connection to heritage
A: Currently, our programs are offered online, allowing us to connect learners across different locations while maintaining a warm and interactive environment.
A: Classes typically meet multiple times a week, depending on the program. We believe that consistent, joyful exposure is key to language development.
A: That is completely okay. We create low-pressure opportunities to participate; value listening as part of learning; celebrate small steps and growth and every child is supported at their own pace.
A: We encourage families to use simple Yorùbá phrases at home; engage with our website activities; participate in community-based learning. This is because language grows best when it becomes part of everyday life.
A: Ẹ̀bùn-Èdè Institute is grounded in the philosophy of giving and community, while also sustaining the work required to run high-quality programs.
