Serve-receive statistics are typically calculated using a standardized 0–3 point scale that rates the quality of the first contact after a serve. This rating is based on how many offensive options the pass gives the setter.
Coaches use this scale to determine how "in-system" or "out-of-system" the team is after receiving a serve:
Rating Descriptions
3 (Perfect)
A perfect pass to the "target" area (usually 2-9 feet from the net).
Setter has all 3 options available (Left, Middle, Right).
2 (Good)
A good pass that may be a few steps away from the target.
Setter usually has 2 options (typically front and back pins).
1 (Poor)
A poor pass or overpass that is far from the setter's target.
Setter has only 1 option or is forced to scramble to just keep the ball in play.
0 (Error)
Service reception error (Ace).
No options; the play ends immediately with a point for the opponent.
