During the Spring of 2024, Umpqua Watersheds began managing Eastwood Nature Days. The program gives all third grade students in the Roseburg School District the opportunity to experience science concepts in a natural setting. Several community partners including ODFW, BLM, Cow Creek Band of Indians and several others provide "Hands-on" activities for the students.
Logs for Drumming Circle Replaced with Support from Lone Rock Resources and Terry Lewis Trucking
No more slivers! When students attended Eastwood Nature Days in the past, they began their day by sitting on one of five large logs which composed the drumming circle. The logs had decayed badly over time; some even splitting in half. Enter several retired Veteran's who cut up and removed the old logs and thanks to Lone Rock Resources and Terry Lewis Trucking for providing and delivering the large logs.
EAGLE SCOUTS Work to Improve Educational Opportunities
During the Fall of 2021, we were very fortunate in having one of the local troops and two of their members working on their Eagle projects in the nature area. Aaron Olson, a current Roseburg High School student and Chris Winters from Glide are both in the process of earning their designation as Eagle Scouts. Aaron's project involved building and installing educational kiosks where visitors of the area can read about the nature area as well as access videos and stories (through the use of a QR code) provided by Eastwood students and community members. Chris's project will include cleaning up the area around a few of the learning stations and rebuilding many of the benches which were worn from weathering (they were originally installed approximately 30 years ago).

Renovation Work on the Plank House!
On September 18, 2021, we were very fortunate to partner with several community organizations as we worked to restore the Native American Plank House on the Eastwood campus. Volunteers began arriving early, and we officially started at 9am. Heavy rain had given way to an intermission long enough to get a lot done. Big thank you to local Veterans from One Source and Chadwick house volunteers who made up the majority of the group. The roof and two sides of the building were completed. All the volunteers agreed to reunite on another Saturday to be announced to complete the job. Special thanks to Keller Lumber, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians, Abby’s Pizza, the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub's Jeff Plummer, Former American Indian Education’s Juliana Marez, Chadwick House’s Rose Mohslick and One Source Veteran’s Service’s Elena Lininger. Two Eastwood Indian Ed. students helped serve lunch, Eliana and Dominic Marez.
On Saturday, October 9th, another work party continued to resurrect the Plank House. All was finished with the exception of one door. Additionally, we straightened the sagging timbers. A huge thanks to all of those who work diligently to get this work completed!! On October 16th, the doors were put on the structure. With a few clean up details remaining, the project is complete!
