Im Rahmen der Tagung "Kosmopolitisch, international, global: Musik, Archive und Politik in Ost- und West-Berlin seit 1963" treffen an diesem Abend Künstlerinnen aus Ost- und West aufeinander und ergründen neue Wege für musikalische Traditionen.

This concert features selected songs composed by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, in the translation and arrangement for voice and piano made by the French musicologist Alain Daniélou. Rabindranath Tagore and Alain Daniélou met in 1932 in Shantiniketan and had, right from the start, a deep mutual understanding and cultural affinities. As Alain Daniélou writes in his autobiography, Tagore requested him to transcribe some of the compositions from the Rabindra Sangeet in the western vogue of the time, for voice and piano. It was, in fact, the Poet’s wish to make it possible for some of his songs to be sung also for a Western audience. Alain Daniélou worked for over 50 years on this project. He translated into English and French and transcribed for piano only 18 songs, in such a way that the original melodies could be recognized, but with a harmonic piano accompaniment that supports and emphasizes the underlying meaning of the poems.
Supported by a scholarship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Dr. Francesca Cassio is the first singer to have studied, performed, and recorded the entire collection of the “Songs of Love and Destiny”, based on Daniélou’s transcriptions of 18 Tagore songs.

Professor of Music and the Sardarni Harbans Kaur Endowed Chair in Sikh Musicology at Hofstra University (NY), Francesca Cassio is an ethnomusicologist and singer who specializes in South Asian vocal music. She is a disciple of the world-renowned musicians Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Khan Dagar, Pandit Ritwik Sanyal, Smt. Amelia Cuni, Dr. Girija Devi, and Bhai Baldeep Singh. Dr. Cassio authored a book on the medieval vocal tradition (dhrupad) of North India and has published several essays in edited volumes and academic journals. In 2022, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for her contribution to the study of Indian music. Dr. Cassio is an accomplished singer of the Dagar Bānī dhrupad and Gurbānī (Sikh) Kīrtan, and has lectured and performed in the USA, Canada, Europe, India, and Bangladesh.

Das Ensemble ĀNGĀH spielt Radif (persisch: ردیف), alte melodische Figuren, die über viele Generationen hinweg mündlich überliefert wurden. Im Laufe der Zeit hat jeder Meister die Tradition durch seine eigene Interpretation ergänzt. Das Ensemble Angah präsentiert Radif-Repertoire aus mehreren Jahrhunderten.
The ensemble ĀNGĀH plays Radif (Persian: ردیف), old melodic figures preserved through many generations by oral tradition. Over time, each master's own interpretation added to the tradition. The ensemble Angah presents Radif repertoire from several centuries.
