The East in Pictures
The image, top right, of the Holywood Arches in 1950 is featured in The East in Pictures, a photographic exhibition of 68 images created by EBHS to mark our 50th anniversary in 2020/21. On our Home page you'll find an image of the Newtownards Road which is also featured in the exhibition.
The original launch was scheduled for September 2020 but had to be postponed due to the fallout from the pandemic.Thankfully, by October 2021 we were up and running at last. Since then the exhibition has visited libraries across the east side - at Woodstock, Dundonald, Holywood Arches and Ballyhackamore.
The exhibition is currently taking a break but we hope there will be further opportunities to have the show back on the road again in the not too distant future. Watch this News page for updates.
EBHS at Central Library
A substantial and diverse collection of historical material from the Society's former archive (previously held in-house) is now available to consult at Belfast Central Library's Heritage department in Royal Avenue. The department is located on the second floor of this historic building; access is by lift or stairs.
At the counter there you can ask to see lists of the categories in the East Belfast Historical Society collection. These include Articles, Booklets, Documents & Records, Leaflets & Pamphlets, Photographs and Print Media – in this latter category you can browse a selection of Belfast Telegraph supplements.
Folders is another category worthy of investigation. These folders contain multiple items on specific subjects, including St. Mark’s Church, Dundela and the Strandtown & Ballyhackamore areas.
