Edward Nygma, known as The Riddler, is Gotham’s main enigma: a man without a past, a name, or an official identity. Raised in the shadows of the city with no family, no education, and no recognition by the system, his genius became twisted by neglect and rejection. He forged his own path as a self-styled detective and criminal mastermind, creating elaborate riddles and cases to challenge Gotham’s heroes—especially Batman. The Riddler thrives on puzzles, games, and the thrill of intellectual rivalry, forever caught between brilliance and madness.
Edward Nygma’s life began in obscurity. He was never given an official identity, never registered as a citizen of Gotham or any neighboring city. Born and raised on the streets without family or caregivers, he lived on the margins, invisible to both society and the law.
Despite his circumstances, Edward possessed an extraordinary intellect. A genius mind, however, was wasted by lack of access to education and recognition. All his potential was buried under poverty and neglect, leaving him embittered and determined to prove himself.
Nygma could have been the greatest genius the world had ever seen, but since the world denied him opportunity, he created his own destiny. He fashioned a new identity—the Riddler—and reinvented himself as a lunatic investigator, obsessed with mysteries, riddles, and puzzles. His cases were never simple crimes, but elaborate games designed to be solved by either himself… or his greatest rival, Batman.
Over time, this obsession evolved into a rivalry. Whenever a new criminal case arose in Gotham, the Riddler felt compelled to match wits with Batman, each seeking the ultimate solution. Their intellectual duels became a recurring theme in the city’s dark underworld.
In the case of Holiday, Riddler suspected Alberto Falcone, while Batman focused on Gilda Dent.
In the case of Hush, Riddler bet on Harold Allnut, while Batman traced the truth to Thomas Elliot.
In the case of The Ripper, Riddler pointed to James Gordon, while Batman uncovered James Gordon Jr.
The Riddler’s investigations were often close to the truth, but his own compulsions and unstable mind caused him to stumble at the final step, ensuring Batman remained one step ahead.
In his most recent scheme, Riddler turned his sights on the greatest mystery of all: Batman’s secret identity. His primary suspect was none other than Alfred Pennyworth—the loyal butler, ex-soldier, and investigator who had stood at Wayne Family’s side for decades.
