Holiday is the codename of a chilling serial killer who orchestrated the calculated decimation of Gotham's crime families in a campaign known as “The Long Halloween.” Their name lingers in Gothamian lore—as both a symbol of criminal chaos and the catalyst for one of the city’s greatest tragedies. he ex-wife of Harvey Dent. This secret was known only to Batman, who chose to withhold the truth from Harvey, sparing him more pain despite her devastating deeds.
Gilda Dent was born in the countryside and moved with her mother and pregnant sister to San Francisco after her gender transition caused an uproar among her old-fashioned neighbors.
Gilda started at Stanford University shortly after the death of her sister, who didn't survive a complicated birth and left her newborn daughter, Holly Gold, in the care of their mother. It was in her first months of college that she met an eccentric but kind young man she developed a crush on: Alberto Falcone.
Coming from a wealthy Italian family in Gotham, Alberto refused to take over his father's business and so began his master's degree in law. The two fell madly in love and lived as a couple, adopting Holly as their daughter until their final year of school. After finishing his academic training, Alberto was called back to his hometown by his father, who wanted to reward him with the position of Gotham's District Attorney. He denied the offer, but in return, he promised to return to Gotham to take his part in the family business.
He spent one year dividing his life with the Falcones while living his secret love with Gilda in San Francisco. But his son's recurring trips outside of Gotham intrigued his father, Carmine Falcone, who instructed his cousins to investigate the boy.
It was easy to discover Gilda's existence and her past. After another routine trip to Gotham, Alberto never returned. Instead, through a phone call, he apologized for his disappearance and stated that they could never see each other again, as his father said the relationship he had with Gilda would be a source of shame for the Falcones.
Shortly after, Gilda found her infant niece Holly's body sprawled on the living room. This was the Falcones' final warning.
Gilda met Harvey in a courtroom when they were both hired to defend the same client. They fell in love, and for a short time, Gilda found a reason to continue living. Then Harvey asked her to marry him and invited her to move to the house he had built in Gotham City, where he planned to run for District Attorney.
She accepted, fearing for the future but still completely haunted by the past.
With great effort, Harvey did get elected as Gotham City's District Attorney, but his popularity also attracted the attention of many enemies. As personal revenge against Falcone, Gilda began sending letters with secrets about the family and the Gotham mafia that she had discovered long ago thanks to her ex-husband. Gotham went through a witch hunt, and Harvey was always one step ahead of the powerful families who had fed on local corruption for so many generations.
One day, Carmine Falcone noticed Gilda in the crowd and greeted her during the inauguration of the renovated Monarch Theatre. His smile was not directed at her famous husband and the center of the event, but at her. He had found her.
There were always disagreements in Harvey and Gilda's marriage, especially when the topic was children. Although he wanted very much to be a father, she always said she was not ready to adopt a child. Secretly, the feeling that consumed her was fear. If the Falcones found out about a child, what would they be capable of doing? She still had nightmares about the baby they took from her, about her first, and secretly still kept her old baby bottles in the basement. But Gilda got tired of being afraid when she decided that the Falcones should pay for what they did.
On Halloween, Gilda arranged a meeting with Johnny Vitti, a cousin of Alberto's who didn't hesitate to invite her in. Secretly in love with her, he retreated to his foamy bathtub for her to join him. A gunshot went through his belly.
On Thanksgiving, she invaded the Irish mob meeting—the Falcone henchmen he hired to investigate her—and carried out a massacre, killing five people.
On Christmas, Milo Grapa, Carmine's personal bodyguard, was murdered as a warning.
On New Year's and Valentine's Day, the Holiday did not attack, having accompanied Harvey to special events to celebrate his achievements and his war on crime.
On St. Patrick's Day, the victim was Frances Carbone, the driver. And on April Fool's Day, the chosen one was Joe Bandano, a traitor who sold information about his own family.
On Mother's Day, no one died; a mother had already been murdered.
On Father's Day, Alberto Falcone, a son for a son.
On Independence Day, Luigi Maroni, after what his son, Sal Maroni, did to Harvey in court.
On Roman Holiday, Carla Falcone, the Roman's sister, was a warning that the Holiday was approaching his last target.
On Halloween, while chaos took over the streets, thanks to the mass escape from Arkham City, a group of degenerates led by Harvey marched toward Carmine Falcone to usher in a new era that would spread throughout Gotham: the era of the insane. Harvey, now completely deranged and having believed he was the Holiday all along, ended the killer's bloody trail by killing the main target.
That same night, Batman visited Gilda in the early hours. He had solved the case, but there was no time. And as she erased the evidence of her crime, she promised Batman that she would never kill again, since the accomplice who took her humanity was no longer alive.
The Dark Knight took pity on Gilda's story and allowed her to leave Gotham unpunished.
Holiday began a year-long series of kills targeting Gotham’s most powerful crime families, striking on or around holidays. The series of murders—nicknamed “The Long Halloween”—systematically dismantled the Falcone empire.
Harvey Dent, then Gotham’s crusading district attorney, was deeply entangled in the case. He secretly corresponded with Holiday, exchanging intelligence and becoming complicit in the underworld’s takedown. When the truth surfaced, Harvey’s world crumbled: his reputation was destroyed, his marriage ended, his wife disappeared—and Holiday vanished as well.
