Dick Grayson, once the youngest member of the acrobatic Flying Graysons, became Gotham’s first Robin after his parents’ murder led Bruce Wayne to adopt him. A skilled fighter and natural leader, he helped Batman bring down his family’s killer, co-founded the Teen Titans, and later created the Robin Class to protect and train Gotham’s orphans. The Joker’s brutal attack during The Massacre left lasting scars, prompting Dick to leave Gotham at 20 and reinvent himself as Nightwing. Leading the New Titans, he now forges his own path as a hero.
Dick Grayson was born in Hope Springs, West Virginia, the son of John and Mary Grayson, members of the famous acrobatic act The Flying Graysons. At the age of 10, tragedy struck when his parents were murdered during a performance, shocking the country. In the crowd that night was billionaire Bruce Wayne, who took in the orphaned boy. The media dubbed it “Billionaire adopts the orphan from ‘Grayson Tragedy’ in Gotham City.”
By age 13, Dick became the first Robin, Batman’s crime-fighting partner. His debut mission ended with the arrest of mobster Tony Zucco, the man responsible for his parents’ deaths. That same year, he co-founded the Teen Titans, a group of young superheroes trained under Batman’s guidance.
Dick don't usually talk about his final days alongside the Teen Titans. Things were great at the beggining, but they became gradually darker as a mysterious figure started to stalk the boy.
Robin was never the same after that.
At 16, when the Titans split up, Dick turned his attention to helping Gotham’s most vulnerable. He launched the Robin Class, a program under the Wayne Charitable Foundation that housed and trained six orphaned children. These children were taught self-defense, given quality education, and encouraged to pursue their own goals, aiming to break Gotham’s cycle of crime and corruption.
The Robin Class’s mission was violently interrupted by The Massacre, carried out by the Joker. In a brutal attack on a charity center run by Bruce Wayne, the Joker left Barbara Gordon paraplegic, killed two children, permanently injured Stephanie Brown, and caused the death of Jason Todd some time later. The tragedy deeply scarred Dick and ended the Robin Class.
By 20, weighed down by grief and survivor’s guilt, Dick left Gotham, feeling he needed a fresh start. He took on the identity of Nightwing, leading the New Titans, a new generation of young heroes who found purpose and hope together. His costume retained the acrobatic influence of his family but was sleeker and more tactical. His signature weapon, an electric baton that could split in half, was a gift from Bruce Wayne before his departure.
Now he's 24 years, and the Titans had just become the most important group of young super-heroes of the world. But he still can't ignore the feeling that something really dark is about to happened. Maybe the past doesn't have to stay burried.
