Jan 9: Sampling Names: We will discuss a modified version of the “sampling words” activity and applet, both in using a more student-centered context to create community in the course and to adapt to a large class size. Classroom-ready materials will be provided and there will be time for meeting in breakout rooms to discuss your own ideas for further modifications.
Jan 16: Playful Approaches to Statistics with Laura Callis: The Best Paper Airplane Model. In this session we will walk through an activity that has been used with both college students and children to introduce the Statistical Investigation Process. We will talk about developing research questions, designing studies, and the impact our study designs can have on our conclusions. The session will demonstrate uses of technology, including using CODAP to explore previously collected paper airplane data and Amplify Activity Builder to encourage broad participation.

Jan 30: Introducing DISCUS-IS with Laura Callis & Jen McNally: A Resource for Learning about Student Thinking and What Works in Statistics Education: One of the challenges of teaching statistics is knowing how or what students are thinking. The DISCUS-IS Project (Discourse to Improve Conceptual Understanding of Statistics in Inclusive Settings, NSF-funded project) investigates instructional practices that work for all students, including neurodivergent students, and documents students’ statistical thinking. In this session, they will launch their website which houses videos of students explaining their statistical thinking about different data sets. Participants will explore a classroom activity that a student interview is based upon, learn about the website, watch and discuss videos of students explaining their statistical thinking.
