Teachers with all levels of experience and familiarity with teaching introductory statistics are encouraged to attend.
Workshop goals are to help faculty participants to teach introductory statistics effectively in accordance with the American Statistical Association’s GAISE recommendations. More specific goals are to:
Immerse participants in hands-on activities for introducing students to statistical concepts, particularly with regard to:
a. Statistical investigation process
b. Multivariable thinking
c. Simulation-based inference
Provide considerable experience with freely available technology tools for exploring statistical concepts and analyzing real data
Discuss assessment items and techniques, along with common student misconceptions
Form a community of statistics teachers to offer on-going mutual support, sharing of resources and ideas
Workshop presenters will be Beth Chance, Karen McGaughey, and Soma Roy, all of whom are Professors of Statistics at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo. These presenters have extensive teaching experience, have co-authored innovative textbooks for introductory and intermediate statistics, and have served in leadership roles for the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education, and the Advanced Placement program in Statistics.
