Kappa Delta originated in 1969 at Missouri University of Science and Technology (previously University of Missouri - Rolla 1964-2008) as the local sorority Lambda Sigma, known as the little sisters of Sigma Pi fraternity. In April 1972, a letter from the National Vice President of Kappa Delta informed them their petition for membership had been accepted. Within a week, pledging ceremonies were held. The new Kappa Deltas started to learn the rules and rituals of the sorority from members of the Alpha Psi Chapter at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, as well as representatives from Kappa Delta’s national organization. During the fall of 1972, the first formal rush was held and on the afternoon of Saturday, October 28, 1972, as 12 young women gathered at Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla, Missouri, dressed in white. The occasion was one of ceremony and celebration, marking the beginning of a new opportunity for the female student body at the male-dominated Missouri S&T campus to join the Greek world.
The current chapter house was built in 2012 and is the most up-to-date sorority chapter house on campus. The chapter house has a multitude of amenities including study rooms, ADA compliant, large dining room, and can sleep 45 people.
The current location was the site of a much smaller house from prior to 2012. Before KD owned the house, a dentist purchased the house and completed an addition to the house for his office space (this later became the Wood Wing rooms). The main house had the kitchen facilities, dining room, and could sleep 20 people.
The annex at 1710 North Pine (where the parking lot is now) was the other half of the chapter house from before 2012. The annex had the laundry facilities, chapter room, and could sleep 15 people.
