Practicum

For my practicum I took the class plcy213, a class on the foundations of nonprofits and the leadership involved in them. I took this class the entire spring semester of my sophomore year at UMD and learned so much about the nonprofit sector.

This class really helped me open my eyes about the prospects and potential of the nonprofit sector. Prior to taking the class I was unaware of how much the nonprofit sector contributes to society. I held the common stereotypical view that nonprofits are not as successful as for-profits and never pictured myself working for one. However, now after taking the class, my entire view has shifted and I am currently interning at a nonprofit this summer! The nonprofit is called ECOS, or the Environmental Council of the States. Their goal is to connect the environmental branches of state governments to each other to improve and the overall environment. I am so excited to participate in this internship and don't believe I would have considered it without taking plcy213.

Hopefully, this leadership will lead into my goals for my professional career. In the future I would love to work in the EPA or any other governmental organization that deals with environmental policy. I have always had a passion about the environment and my ultimate goal is to make an impact through policy.

Located under the artifact tab, I have uploaded a paper I wrote for plcy213. It is a summary about an interview that I completed for the class when I interviewed the president of a nonprofit and got to learn about the inner workings of their organization.
