Garzweiler Mines
Join an excursion to the famous Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine, where large-scale coal extraction has been met with criticism for its carbon emissions and environmental impact. As part of the largest open-cast mining area in Germany, up to 100 tons of lignite are extracted in the triangle of cities between Aachen, Cologne and Mönchengladbach every year. Observe firsthand the site’s massive excavators and shifting landscapes, the latter of which can even be spotted from space. Learn about the challenging balance between economic interests, energy security, and evolving sustainability goals as you experience a truly spectacular view over the vastness of the open-cast mine.
