Abstract: This paper presents a review of available literature describing methods of modelling heavy truck behaviour. The review focuses on analytical work and related experiments that pertain to undesirable responses of commercial vehicles such as loss of control during braking, directional and roll instabilities, and amplified directional motions occurring with many-axled articulated trailers. A key to successful simulation of heavy truck behaviour is a mathematical model that includes the sensitive elements of the vehicle with sufficient flexibility to enable operational situations to be tested. Among the vehicle elements one can account for, pneumatic tyres appear to have a significant influence on the dynamic performance of heavy trucks. Recent advances in the modelling process include incorporating non-holonomic constraints in the formulation to supplement the knowledge of the dynamical properties of heavy vehicles in emergency manoeuvres.

This document specifies a method for comparing simulation results from a vehicle model to measured test data for an existing vehicle according to closing-curve tests as specified in ISO 11026. The purpose of the validation is to demonstrate that the vehicle dynamics simulation, combined with an integrated electronic stability control (ESC) system, can predict the roll and yaw stability behaviour of a physical vehicle, including the ESC system interventions, during a closing-curve test. The simulation method can be either hardware-in-the-loop [with the original electronic control unit (ECU) on a HiL test stand] or software-in-the-loop, based on a software code generated from the same source as for the ECU in the real vehicle. In order to improve the ride comfort, the use of high-pressure tires should be limited by {0.8 to 1.2}Kt0. In addition, to improve the ride comfort of heavy trucks, the impact of the seat and cab suspension parameters on the ride comfort also need to analyze.

Real vehicle collision experiments on full-scale road safety barriers are important to determine the outcome of a vehicle versus barrier impact accident. However, such experiments require large investment of time and money. Numerical simulation has therefore been imperative as an alternative method for testing concrete barriers. In this research, spring subgrade models were first developed to simulate the ground boundary of concrete barriers. Both heavy trucks and concrete barriers were modeled using finite element methods (FEM) to simulate dynamic collision performances. Comparison of the results generated from computer simulations and on-site full-scale experiments demonstrated that the developed models could be applied to simulate the collision of heavy trucks with concrete barriers to provide the data to design new road safety barriers and analyze existing ones.
