During my Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Caltech’s AMBER Lab, which specializes in bipedal humanoids and locomotion, I designed and integrated a modular foot-sensing system for humanoid robots to measure ground reaction forces and moments during walking. The system combines force-sensitive resistors, inertial measurement units, and custom Teensy-based PCBs to capture spatial and temporal force data, supporting improved modeling of foot-ground interactions for more stable, adaptive locomotion.
My AMBER Lab SURF experience solidified my passion for hardware-centered robotics research by allowing me to design, prototype, and test a full sensing system from concept to integration on a humanoid robot. Through hands-on work with sensors, embedded systems, and mechanical design, I developed a deep appreciation for the interplay between hardware functionality and robotic performance. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue future research in robotic mechanism design and sensing for locomotion and manipulation.
