VR Game Design - I Am Octopus (Meta, SideQuest)(Small Team)
I Am Octopus is a VR game where you play as an Octopus who is being experimented on by the evil Dr Docto. My role in this lean but powerful team fits more into a producer/designer role, leading design choices, providing regular feedback on builds, running playtesting sessions and coordinating external outreach.
VR Game Design and Development - The Doctors Room (Meta, SideQuest)(Solo)
The Doctors Room is an introductory experience for VR users that utilises hand tracking and mixed reality technology as players try to figure out the code to escape spooky but not-too-spooky escape rooms. The goal of this game was to gather more data around the VR platform for I Am Octopus and to try and turn around a VR game using these new technologies as quickly as possible. The key challenge here to overcome has (and for VR will most likely be for a long time) optimisation and adapting design to work with less traditional PC interfaces and interactions.
PC Game Design and Development - Tesserarii (Steam, Itch.io)(Solo)
Tesserarii is a dice rolling roguelike where you must increase the power of your dice rolls and combos to deliver satisfyingly powerful blows to the enemy. This game I took solo from ideas phase all the way to post production and updates, experimenting with many Steam features. There were many challenges and lessons to be learnt surrounding data structures, player onboarding, programming balancing and game polish.
Mobile Design and Development - Land It! (Google Play Store)(Small Team)
Land It! is a mobile game which utilises strong inspiration from the 1979 Arcade title Lunar Lander, but brings it to the modern era for mobile. In a small team I was lead designer resposible for level layouts, economy balancing, monetisation structure.
Various Design and Development - Killed Games (Various platforms)(Various Teams)
Some projects just don't make it to production, but there are still very valid learnings to be had. Unfortunately I cant show off all projects here, but I thought it would be valuable to mention the unalived games for so many various reasons (Failed market test, didn't turn out as fun as I had imagined, idea was already being developed by another indie studio and didn't want to steal their thunder, multiplayer framework limits, VR limits etc). I will show a few off here
App Design and Development - FLY! (2018 Unpublished Google Play Store)(Solo)
Solo Development 2D side scrolling game, FLY, which was published to Google Play but unfortunately due to lack of support has been removed from the Store. I used the Unity Game Engine for development and Photoshop for asset creation and/or modification.
The intention behind this game development cycle was to learn about all the procedures required to publish a game on the Google Play Store as well as figure out how monetisation works through advertisements and through IAP. Gameplay is simple and requires players to press to increase the height of their plane and release will cause the plane to free fall. Crashing into procedurally generated enemy planes will cause a game over.
App Design - One20 Degrees (2018 Unpublished Google Play Store)(Solo)
One20 Degrees is a simple arcade game which the player controls a dot which circles around enclosing hexagons by tapping the left and right of the screen to rotate, based off Super Hexagon. It has since been removed from the Google Play Store taken down due to lack of update and support for latest Android versions. I was the sole member for this game and as such all programming and asset creation was done by yours truly. Game engine used was Unity with the assets being designed in Photoshop.
The intention behind this game development cycle was to create a game with short challenging player sessions with quick but simple gameplay. Gameplay involves pressing the left and right sides of the screen to radially maneuver the player (a ball) through a series of shrinking hexagons. There is no load screen and it is simply tap to start playing, getting the player right into the game loop.
HTML
In my spare time I have worked through many online exercises for HTML through providers such as KhanAcademy and CodeAcademy where I have refined my knowledge for HTML.
Programming
CodeAcademy, Udemy and other academic resources were used to brush up and expand upon on my programming skills. Skills which I have improved upon are Solidity and Java.
Modding
Also during my spare time I have put together some mods for various games such as Super Mario and Pokemon. Also, I have expanded upon my game design skills using the Star Craft II editor.
