I started writing during the second pandemic lockdown in January 2021. With everyone at home for months, there were few other distractions and it was a natural moment to start a new hobby.
I had been reading the types of novels that I now write, although I had started to get bored of the formulaic pattern and thought I should give it try. I wanted to use more logic, less cliches and less predictability; such as the hero character doesn’t always win.
I’d always had lots of ideas for stories, that I would quickly forget about, and I found that the best way to remember them is to immediately start writing. Once writing you really get a chance to flesh these ideas out and go into the minute detail of landscapes, characters and relationships. I enjoy the slow methodical process of explaining a journey through mythological worlds. By making hoards of notes I was able to keep the story accurate and consistent, something that used to bug me with other stories.
I generally write them for myself, often leaving them on my PC in an unfinished state that I return to when I get time. However, I did self-publish my second novel during lockdown, by writing a few chapters a week and uploading it to WebNovel. Over four months I posted 78 chapters, each consisting of 1,500 - 2,000 words, totaling 147,000 before I stopped publishing it.
Using WebNovel’s analytics tools I was able to see that it has amassed 820,000 views (as of May 2025) and at its peak, over 5,000 had added it to their personal libraries to be notified of updates. With these stats the novel was considered reasonably successful on the website, often getting lots of comments and questions for the author. It was especially rewarding when it reached 115th place in the weekly voting polls, considering there were nearly half a million novels on the site at the time.
For personal space reasons I will not be sharing the name of the novel publicly but it is still uploaded and is monetizable, as I reached the website’s threshold but opted to keep it free to access.
I continue to write fantasy light novels as a hobby and may publish again.
