Legal, IEP, or Advocate Support

These are places to start if you are looking for an IEP advocate or legal advice. In addition to the below organizations, parents/caregivers often bring existing case managers or therapists to support them in IEP meetings. Anyone who has a history working with the student and can help communicate their academic and theraputic needs can strengthen your team in an IEP meeting. Parents/caregivers are legally allowed to record IEP meetings in NC.

ECAC NC - organization dedicated to empowering North Carolina families and improving the lives of children with disabilities and/or special health care needs. 

ECAC IEP Road Map - A guide to help families understand the IEP development process, navigate the North Carolina IEP forms and meaningfully participate in their child’s IEP meetings.

North Carolina Legal Aid Special Education Advocacy Toolkit - Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.

Disability Awareness and History Month (October)

Resources to encourage and assist school staff, PTAs, and parent volunteers in providing activities and curriculum about Disability History and Awareness during the month of October.  Activities promote understanding of the challenges individuals with disabilities face and promote awareness of the contributions individuals with disabilities make.  They include book readings, art projects, hands-on activities, bulletin boards, parent education, and guest speakers. These activities are suggestions, not mandates. DAEC does not officially endorse any of these resources.

NC General Assembly Proclamation - In 2007, the state of NC passed a law requiring that “Each local board of education shall provide instruction on disability, people with disabilities, and the disability rights movement in conjunction with Disability History and Awareness Month.” 

Durham Public Schools Disability History & Awareness Month Resource & Activity Guide PK-12 - Suggestions for schools that seek to integrate age-appropriate disability history/culture, accessibility, and inclusion into existing instruction and school activities.

Disability Rights North Carolina - Disability Rights North Carolina is a non-profit organization that provides advocacy and legal services at no charge for people with disabilities across North Carolina. This site contains many resources designed to increase the ability of individuals with disabilities and their families to engage in self advocacy.

First in Families - The Central Carolina Chapter of First In Families of NC has special family support funding available for goods and services that help individuals with developmental / intellectual disabilities and their family members thrive in the community, according to their own goals and dreams. 

Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) - Autism Society of North Carolina provides advocacy, training and education and direct care services to individuals with autism, their families and professionals.
