North Carolina Legal Aid Special Education Advocacy Toolkit - Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.

Triangle Disability & Autism Services

An affiliated chapter of The Arc, supports children and adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities [IDD] and autism in the achievement of their personal goals and dreams in our community through partnership and advocacy.

First in Families

The Central Carolina Chapter of First In Families of NC has special family support funding available for goods and services that help individuals with developmental / intellectual disabilities and their family members thrive in the community, according to their own goals and dreams. 

Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC)

Autism Society of North Carolina provides advocacy, training and education and direct care services to individuals with autism, their families and professionals.

Disability Awareness and History Month (October)

These resources are here to encourage and assist school staff, PTAs, and parent volunteers in providing activities and curriculum about Disability History and Awareness during Disability Awareness Month, October.  

Activities should promote understanding of the challenges individuals with disabilities face, but also to promote awareness of the contributions individuals with disabilities make.  They could include book readings, art projects, hands-on activities, bulletin boards, guest speakers, or essays that promote better understanding, awareness, and appreciation of individuals with disabilities.

A parent education component is also recommended to promote inclusion in the school community

NC General Assembly Proclamation - In 2007, the state of NC passed a law requiring that “Each local board of education shall provide instruction on disability, people with disabilities, and the disability rights movement in conjunction with Disability History and Awareness Month.”
