Core Beliefs

The major focus of Durham Advocates for Exceptional Children is system-wide matters as opposed to individual concerns.

• Given appropriate support, all students can achieve growth in academics and the skills that will enable them to maximize their potential and meaningfully participate in the community.

• Providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students with special needs benefits all students and the community as a whole.

• All students are more successful when families and DPS work together.

Goals 

1. Policy: To influence policy related to the education of students with special needs. 

2. Collaboration and Outreach: To foster communication among families, the community, and DPS, and to  increase awareness of DPS services pertaining to students with special needs.

3. Best Practices: To promote effective training and evidence-based practices such as inclusion, to support  students with special needs in DPS. 

4. Recognition: To recognize the positive contributions of DPS professionals and community partners in  supporting students with special needs. 

5. Data: To elicit and examine data relating to DPS students with special needs as a means of highlighting  successes and potential areas for growth
