My name is Meryl and I am a Dublin student who wants to help other Dublin students understand composting. Did you know that if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases? Composting can help because if composting levels worldwide increased, emissions could be reduced by 2.1 billion tons by 2050.
Composting Around the World
Many countries have very successful composting programs. Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, and Germany send less than 3% of their waste to landfills. South Korea turns its food waste into biofuel, compost, or animal feed, and it was illegal there to throw away food waste in garbage by 2006.
The United States is not quite as advanced in composting. About thirty to forty percent of the United States’ food supply is wasted.
Within Central Ohio, about a million pounds of food are put into landfills every day. About five pounds of food are landfilled per Franklin County resident each week.
What can I do to help?
That's what this site is here for! Here you will find information on what exactly composting is, how to do it yourself at home, and some local services that can make composting easier. As students, you have the power to influence your families’ decisions, as well as form habits that will help you lead a sustainable adult life.
