DOPL requires 60 credit hours, including the following:
(a) social and cultural diversity;
(b) group counseling and group work;
(c) human growth and development;
(d) career development;
(e) counseling and helping relationships;
(f) substance-related and addictive disorders;
(g) assessment and testing;
(h) mental status examination and the appraisal of DSM maladaptive and psychopathological behavior;
(i) research and program evaluation; and
(j) include 700 documented hours of supervised clinical training from at least one practicum or internship, of which 240 hours consists of providing therapy directly to clients.
**An internship in the school does not count towards your clinical internship hours.
(a) Earn a minimum of a master's degree in school counseling from either Utah State University, University of Utah, Utah Valley University, or Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (these are the only accredited institutions in Utah who offer a master’s level school counseling program). Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions also offers a license-only program for candidates who already have a master’s degree in a related field (contact Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions directly for further questions);
(b)Pass the PRAXIS 5421 Test with a score of 164 or higher; and
(c) Receive a recommendation for licensure from the university in which the program was completed.
