Internship Questions to Ask
(Bryant, 2022)
How do I get my 3,000 hours after graduation?
Getting your ACMHC 3,000 hours can look daunting to a school counselor or someone who wants to pursue school counseling full-time first. You might wonder how I will ever meet the deadline of 3,000 hours in 2-3 years?
Dr. Ken Roach, who also sits on the Utah board of DOPL, states that he thinks it makes sense to get the school counseling license first and the CMHC license afterward. ACMHCs must demonstrate satisfactory progress towards full licensure to be granted an extension to their license. Roach also adds that appearing before the board is usually a formality and isn't even unpleasant when asking for an extension (K. Roach, personal communication, March 30, 2022).
These are his recommendations:
Get an ACMHC license as soon as you graduate.
If you can work 5-10 hours/week as an ACMHC. (This will make it easier to convince the board that you're progressing towards your license.)
ACMHCs have the same continuing education requirements as LCMHCs.
