Going on an Expedition

PRIOR to the USE in the Classroom - Preparation.

1. Make sure all ipods and tablet are charged up prior to use - preferably do this the evening before. Connect to charging bay. As shown in the photo below. The charging bay can only charge 16 ipods at any one time - thus the need to ensure plenty of time to ensure all devices are charged prior to use. *** THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT IPODS WILL BE CHARGED WHEN TO GET THE KIT

2. Check tablet has all the relevant Expeditions that you need downloaded. The ones with a "tick" on them are the one that are already downloaded on the tablet. The DTAC Team have attempted to download as many relevant Expeditions as possible - but they may not be the ones you want - and they are constantly adding more. To download more Expeditions you will need to connect the Tablet to your own wifi connection. It is best to do this AT HOME - due to various schools firewalls and various internet security.

3. Browse through the Expeditions - Notes are available in each Expedition with points of interest & plenty of extra information. Slide UP the orange bar to find info and points of interest. To go to more "scenes" - slide the "orange bar" at the bottom from right to left. This will open a new scene.

See what is there, become familiar with the notes in each Expedition, and what teaching points you would like to share with your students.

Or just use for fun :-)

You can check out a list of expeditions - that people are constantly updating:

Ready to Go!

1. Connect Airport Extreme to power. Wait for GREEN Light. This will send out 2 wifi connections "DTAC Wifi Network 5GHz". There will be another Network visible - "DTAC Wifi Network" - this is a 2.5Ghz channel and not as powerful - and should be IGNORED.

**this created a LOCAL Network for devices to connect to - it does NOT connect to the internet. We have made it this way - as many schools have firewalls/security etc. Our setup will only require power & no internet connection during its use.

2. Ipods & Tablet should all automatically connect to the "DTAC Wifi Network 5GHz".

PLEASE NOTE: Ensure tablet is connected to this wifi network. It may not automatically connect, if you have connected it to another wifi network to download more expeditions. Password: Wangaratta3677

3. Teacher/ Guide - opens Expeditions App on Tablet - "Accept" conditions pop-up - It should then automatically open as a "Guide" - if not choose to be a "Guide". Then Choose an expedition to take students on - Open the Expedition and press "Start"

4. Students/Explorers - open the Expedition app on the ipods - "Accept" conditions pop-up - It should then automatically open up as Explorers. If not get students to choose "Explorer" - the students ipod should automatically get a prompt to JOIN Expedition.

5. Put ipods into Googles - Ask student to put their ipods into the Goggles - remind them to be careful with the equipment. They made need to hold the goggles slightly away from their face, and not have it pushed up against their face for better viewing. The focal length of the lens can not be adjusted - thus the distance of the goggles to the eyes will need to adjusted for clearer viewing.

6. Teacher/Guide - check that all devices are connected to the Expedition - see icon on top right hand corner of the screen.

7. Guiding the Expedition : Once all devices are connected - continue with guiding the Expedition. Remember - Slide UP the orange bar to find info and points of interest. To got to more "scenes" - slide the "orange bar" at the bottom from right to left. This will open a new scene with more info and pints of interest.

8. Enjoy and have fun, let the students enjoy the experience - you will see smiley faces of where the students are viewing on your screen, but will not know who it actually is. However you will see if you have any "stray" students if you are after them to look at a particular point of interest.

Remember - Students will want to explore - you will find they are quite excited and will be very animated and chatty - telling each other what they are seeing etc etc So you may have to allow some extra time to "play" first - before going into the teaching points.

If a student feels dizzy - they can still be involved - but with out the goggles:

Click on the little square in the corner - and they can just use the ipod without the goggles.

PACK UP

1. Ensure students carefully remove ipod from goggles and - EXIT from expeditions App and turn off ipods - this will save battery power. If they do not exit from the Expeditions App it will continue to "search" for a tour and drain the battery.

2. Exit from Expeditions App on the Tablet - swipe to turn app completely off with save battery power.

2. Place ipods back into the Case with charging point facing upwards - so it is easy to connect for recharging.

*** DO NOT PACK UP EQUIPMENT WITH POWER CABLES STILL PLUGGED INTO THE DEVICES! THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CABLES ***

3. Carefully fold up goggles and place in protective box and then in large plastic tub.

4. CHECK - Equipment is all back properly.

25 ipods

1 tablet

30 sets of goggles ( extra googles for students with own device)

5. Pack up Airport Extreme with all relevant cables etc.

6. Charge ipods, if needed again for another session.

GO TO PACK UP AND STORAGE - for how equipment should be packed away.
