Racism & Criminal Justice System
Presentation prepared for the Colorado Public Defenders Office.
The primary purpose was to explore institutional and individual implications of racism in the criminal justice system (CJS) in the United States. Dr. Brenda J. Allen, defines key terms, offer an historical overview of racism in the CJS, and reviews relevant perspectives on the U.S. legal profession and on public defenders. Dr. Allen concludes with recommendations for next steps.
A Note from Dr. Allen: Please note that my focus on racism and racially minoritized groups and individuals does not deny that white groups and individuals also face injustices in the criminal justice system.
