In my life, I see dance not only as the codified technique one is taught within the studio but through social narratives and dialogues captured within daily occurrences. This creates space to challenge traditional, conventional concert dance and investigate thought-provoking questions and alternative modes when developing performance choreography. Most recently, my work has utilized the studio as a laboratory, space for dancers to explore the ability to connect to physical materials. The materials are not considered as a prop, but as the catalyst to propel movement possibilities in adding additional layer of texture to the visual aesthetic of the work.
As a Ph.D. Art and Design candidate, I am motivated by reconsidering new methods of exploring objects, mixed mediums and visual art in order to capture unpredictable choreographic intent of expressing the body through movement. Utilizing philosophies of Husserl, by questioning the relationship of bodies and objects in performance, the research aims to view dance through the philosophical lens of intersubjectivity. In doing so, it attempts to level the hierarchy of objects and humans by recontextualizing both as things, generating the groundwork for examining an equitable environment through deconstructing and fragmenting relationships between dancers and objects.
Influenced by sensorial stimuli, the imagination motivates questions that guide a process in creating a purpose to explore choreography, contributing unity between people, their relationships with one another and their ability to share their art with the public. My ambition is to arrive at a deeper meaning of interdisciplinary forms, function and performativity and to inspire future generations as an ever-evolving arts practice.
