An opportunity for delegates to hear some real case studies of MATs and SATs that have had difficulties and to share thoughts on lessons that have been (or need to be) learnt. The session will draw from direct experience of the following examples

  • A SAT that did not plan for low pupil numbers and how new Trust turned that from a deficit to a surplus

  • A MAT that created a central cost that was unsustainable

  • A MAT that had a number of breaches of the academy financial handbook

  • A MAT that did not pay its creditors and allowed its cashflow to go out of control

Workshop 3, Improving School Food Whilst Reducing Costs? Impossible Right? We Think Not!

Workshop 4, Keeping Data Safe in Eduction: Achieving & Maintaining Data Protection Compliance

The GDPR is 3 and a half years old and, although we transferred to the UK GDPR in January 2021, the fundamental legislation has not changed. Organisations are at different stages on their journey towards compliance and ensuring that they are fully accountable for data protection.

During this session, we will look at what your organisation should have in place to establish compliance with the UK GDPR, what systems and processes will allow you to demonstrate ongoing accountability for data protection, and how you can take a pragmatic approach to assessing where your organisation is on the journey. “Making risk management conversations wider than just the business manager” - Lee Miller MBE


The session will share a journey that my Trust has gone on over the past few years to make risk management a more common and effective discussion across all leadership levels within the organisation. As a result, a simpler more inclusive risk tracking process was created, that has not only led to the organisation having greater awareness of risk, but a clearer ownership of actions to mitigate the impact and likelihood of a risk happening.
