Description

We designed a smart waste management system for gated communities which focuses on segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Waste is compressed and biodegradable waste is converted to manure for further usage. The bin has an app that helps notify people if it’s full and needs maintenance.

Prototype

This is our prototype for smart waste management system. It's a smart bin having 2 compartments. The yellow compartment is for disposing biodegradable waste. It has a magnetic door which only opens on contact to prevent spillage and foul smell. Waste in this compartment is converted into manure overtime and monitored using sensors. Anyone can check the status of the bin and report grievances using the companion app for the bin. This will help in easy and efficient maintenance of the bin. Simultaneously, the bin will also indicate with LEDs its status, with red indicating that its full. There is a small door at the bottom of this compartment that will allow the bin to be emptied from below since that's where manure will form first. The green non-biodegradable compartment has a removable tray for convenience in cleaning. Both the compartments have pistons for compressing waste to increase space inside.
