Cardiac electrophysiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals with abnormalities of the heart rhythm (electrical problems of the heart) or arrhythmias. 

An electrophysiologist or EP is a cardiologist who specialises in abnormal heart rhythms that can be treated with medication (antiarrhythmics), ablation (cauterisation) by catheter, or by implantation of a pacemaker/defibrillator. Usually, the electrophysiologist has undergone several years of specific training in addition to his training as a cardiologist.
